Sixth seed Magee crashes out despite win

Baku, June 25, AZERTAC Sixth seed Chloe Magee of Ireland was knocked out of the women's badminton singles on Wednesday despite winning her final group match against Lianne Tan, as the Belgian went through to the last 16 alongside Kati Tolmoff of Estonia. Magee, 26, needed a straight-sets win but lost the first 21-11, meaning she slipped to third in Group F behind Tan, courtesy of an inferior difference between games won and lost in her three matches. Tolmoff, who retired in 2009 before making a comeback after having two children, tops the group. "They didn't tell me before (not to lose a game), they just told me to go out and win. But I came off and I just knew," Magee said. "She should have just given it to me - she knew I'd won already," joked Tan. Magee remains alongside brother Sam in the mixed doubles, the final round of which takes place on Thursday from 10:00. Men's top seed Scott Evans of Ireland sailed through with three straight wins in the men's singles, although third see Pablo Abian of Spain had to settle for second place in Group C after losing to Germany's Dieter Domke. Both the women's and men's doubles went to form, with top seeded men Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen of Denmark still hoping to be on a collision course with European champions Vladimir Ivanov and Ivan Sozonov of Russia in Sunday's final. The singles round of 16 begins at 10:00 on Thursday, with the doubles quarterfinals starting from 17:00.
