Putin signs law obliging home storage of data on Russian citizens

MOSCOW, July 22 (Itar-Tass) -- Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a law obliging mail services and social networks to store personal data of domestic users only on servers located on the Russian territory, according to the corresponding document released Tuesday. The law will come into force on September 1, 2016. Operators must ensure that information is added, systematized, stored, verified and updated by using domestically-located servers. The personal data comprise e-mail addresses, correspondence and so forth. The law stipulates sanctions for violations. Operators will be added to a special register of violators for a failure to follow the domain and network requirements, while access to an information resource will be restricted until violations are not fixed.
