Historical Society Wants Clock Tower Gazetted As Historical Heritage

PADANG BESAR (Perlis, Malaysia) Aug 1 (Bernama) -- The Perlis branch of the Malaysian Historical Society wants the state government to gazette the clock tower at the old State Secretariat Building here as a heritage building. Its chairman, Yazid Mat said although the building was still being used as a government office, the gazette was necessary so that no renovation could be made that would remove the original structure of the building. He disclosed this to reporters after chairing a committee meeting of the society at its office in Chuping, near here Monday. Yazid said the building was a symbol of the perseverance of the craftsmen in the old days. One floor of the building was built using solid rock without cement which was substituted with white egg and honey for the rocks to stick. The building was erected towards the end of the 1930's and had been used as the office for the British advisor, menteri besar's office, the office of the state secretary, speaker and legal advisor, state land and minerals office and the state development office. -- BERNAMA
