Turkey's foreign minister wishes to see Palestine as UN full member next year
NEW YORK (A.A) - September 27, 2011 - Turkey's foreign minister expressed his wish on Monday that Palestine would be a full member of the United Nations (UN) in 2012.
Ahmet Davutoglu said he attended the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in New York, and during the meeting, he had wished that Palestine would be a UN full member next year.
"During the meeting, I told Palestinian Foreign Minister Riad Malki that Palestine would take its place as a full member of the UN in the following year," Davutoglu told a press conference in New York.
Davutoglu said CICA would work more on confidence-building measures in coming days, and it would increase its meetings on tourism and culture.
"We also discussed bringing together countries that have tension with each other in a joint platform, and creating a confidence-building measure structure from base to the top," he said.
Davutoglu said Israel also attended the meeting, and Turkey and Israel had some problems however Turkey had a peculiar position as it held the rotating presidency of the international forum.
"Israel, Iran, Palestine and all countries participated in the meeting, some of them in the level of minister some of them in the level of deputy minister," he said.
Davutoglu said Turkey would hold CICA's rotating presidency until June 2012 and aimed to institutionalize the forum.
Moreover, Davutoglu said Economic Cooperation Organization and Association of South Asian Nations (ASEAN) countries met under co-chairmanship of Turkey and Cambodia in New York two days ago.
"ECO and ASEAN countries met for the first time under the margin of the UN, and they decided to gather together from now on," Davutoglu said.
Davutoglu said Turkey would probably host the first meeting, which would be a part of Turkey's Asia strategy and the two group pointed to a huge economic potential.
Foreign Minister Davutoglu said Turkey would host a broadened regional summit on Afghanistan in Istanbul on November 2.
Davutoglu said CICA was open to all Asian countries, and Iran and Israel were participating in the same platform. Therefore, there was no reason for Azerbaijan and Armenia to not be present in the same platform, he said.
Davutoglu said CICA was not a forum excluding any country, but was one trying to build confidence among all countries.
CICA has 24 members and eight observers including the United States. UN, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), and the Arab League are observer organizations in the forum.
