Turkish finance minister says latest budget figures reflect second surplus in 21 years

ANKARA (A.A) - 15.02.2011 - The Turkish finance minister said on Tuesday that Turkey's Central Government Budget ran a surplus for the second time in 21 years in January 2011.
The 2011 Central Government Budget ran a surplus of 1 billion Turkish liras (TL) in January 2011. The budget had run a deficit of 3,121 million TL in January 2010.
Commenting on the latest figures, Turkish Finance Minister Mehmet Simsek said, "Since 1990, the central government budget has run a surplus for the second time in January this year. The last time the budget recorded a surplus was January 2006."
Simsek said that his government had been implementing tight measures in economy and budgetary practices since the beginning.
"We do not display a populist stance. We carry on with fiscal discipline although it is the year of elections. Latest budget figures also prove this fact," he said.
The minister noted that the 1 billion TL surplus in the budget in January, as well as the primary surplus exceeding 4.8 billion TL in the same month showed how serious the government acted on the matter.
"These successful figures do not mean that we will show any reluctance. We will keep the fiscal discipline on track. As a result, we will achieve our goals in economy," Simsek said.
