Turkish president says Istanbul Conference will be a road map for least developed countries
ISTANBUL (A.A) – 09.05.2011 – Turkish President Abdullah Gul said that the 4th Summit in Istanbul would be a road map for the least developed countries for the next decade.
Making opening remarks of the Fourth United Nations Conference on the Least Developed Countries (LDC-IV) at Istanbul's Lutfi Kirdar Congress Center, President Gul said, "today, we have gathered in Istanbul to extend full support to the least developed countries."
"There are more than a billion people living in the least developed countries. The international community have responsibilities to improve their living standards," he said.
"While the gap between the least developed countries and the rest of the world has been deepening, no one can expect peace and security to prevail in the world. On the other hand, investing in the least developed countries which are rich of natural resources, is a significant commercial decision that will lead to a win-win situation. Our biggest support to the least developed countries is to help them to ensure a sustainable development. We need to develop a new vision about the least developed countries. And this vision should bring forth new parameters. The 4th Conference in Istanbul will be road map for the least developed countries for the next decade," he said.
President Gul said, "at the end of the event, Istanbul Action Plan will be signed. We have to make some changes in daily lives of more than 1 billion people in the least developed countries with the action plan."
"Some under-developed countries have reached a sound growth performance in the last decade. However, more than half of the least developed countries have a slight or negative growth in the same period. Civil wars, global financial crisis, climate changes, epidemics and increasing prices of food and oil have added misery to these countries," he said.
"We can overcome the problems of food shortage and epidemics. We can help these countries to develop their production capacity in the sectors of agriculture and services. I believe that the Istanbul Action Plan will create a new momentum," he said.
President Gul said that investments would make a significant contribution to sustainable development and efforts to create employment in the least developed countries.
"We need some reformist initiatives to this end. For instance we can develop support programs for investments. Also, education is the most important element in our combat against poverty. There are also lots of things to be done in the areas of health and food safety. Any development about women will mean progress for everyone," he said.
"As a member of the G-20 and as a country holding accession negotiations with the European Union, Turkey tries to do everything in its power to support the least developed countries. Recently, we have increased our annual financial aid to those countries up to $2 billion with the support of the Turkish non-governmental organizations," he said.
"Istanbul is considered as the cradle of civilizations. I hope that Istanbul will be the city which will change the destiny of 1 billion people after this conference," President Gul concluded.
