Turkish president says Turkey is self-confident & strong thanks to reforms

IZMIR (A.A) - 08.05.2011 - The Turkish president has said that Turkey had become a self-confident and strong country thanks to a series of successful reforms as several EU countries struggled with serious crises nowadays.
Speaking at a meeting of Aegean businessmen in Izmir, Turkish President Abdullah Gul said the economic situation in Turkey was more assuring than many European countries at the moment and Turkey's economic indicators were in line with the Maastrich criteria.
"Several EU member states are currently going through major crises as they cannot meet this criteria. You will all see that some countries will also face serious crises in near future. In such a period, Turkey has self confidence and takes strong steps," he said.
Gul said that Turkey should deepen and strengthen its economic and political structures as well as its democratic, political and legal reforms in order to maintain such position.
Commenting on the Izmir's place in Turkish economy, Gul said Izmir was one of the most advantageous regions of the country and a major attraction center for both national and international investors.
Pointing to the importance of Izmir's promotion, Gul noted that EXPO 2015 had been a good chance for the city in that sense, but unfortunately, Izmir had lost the competition despite intense efforts.
"I believe Izmir win will the race to host EXPO 2020," the president said, noting that all political parties and institutions should display joint efforts to help the city win such title this time.
