Turkish president in Vienna

VIEANNA (A.A) - 03.05.2011 - Turkish President Abdullah Gul has said that Turkey was the best route for Europe to reach safe energy resources.
Speaking at the Austria-Turkey Business Forum in Vienna on Tuesday, President Gul said, "Turkey has been a member of the Customs Union for 16 years. And Turkey's industry has the power to compete with Europe's most important industries. Also, Turkey has become one of a few countries which succeeded in catching Maastricht criteria. Turkey's foreign debt burden accounts for 40 percent of its national income. Many European Union-member states could not reach those figures and faced serious financial problems. Turkey became Europe's fastest growing country in 2010 with a growth rate of 8.9 percent. I call on Austrian people to get more information about Turkey and not to miss Turkey's opportunities."
Referring to energy, President Gul said, "Turkey is lack of oil and natural gas, but it has a great potential of alternate energy. Turkey is one of the most successful countries in terms of hydroelectric power plants. Also, Turkey is one of the world's most important countries in terms of pipelines. Turkey is the route for Europe to reach safe energy resources. Nabucco project is one of them."
President Heinz Fischer, on his part, referred to the Nazi era between 1938 and 1945 and said that Austrian artists and scientists took shelter in Turkey and found a peaceful home in Turkey during the dark days of his childhood.
He said that Austrian investors successfully undertook remarkable projects in Turkey and called on Turkish businessmen to invest in Austria.
Prior to the meeting, President Gul met executives of several Austrian companies over breakfast.
President is set to meet Austrian Chancellor Werner Faymann.
After hosting a reception in honor of Austrian President Heinz Fischer and his wife Margit Fischer in Vienna, Gul will proceed to Salzburg.
