Bae Eun-shim, the mother of the late student activist Lee Han-yeol, reads her letter to her son during a ceremony to mark the June 10, 1987, democratization movement at the Democracy and Human Rights Memorial Hall in Seoul on June 10, 2020. Lee fell into a coma after being hit by a tear gas canister hurled by riot police during a pro-democracy street protest in Seoul on June 8, 1987. He died about a month later, triggering a series of violent anti-government street demonstrations across the country that forced the government to introduce a direct presidential election system.
