Government goes ahead with economic triangle project in Thai Far South
BANGKOK, March 6 (TNA) - The government will drive forward a project on the development of an economic triangle, targeted Betong, Nong Jik and Su-ngai Golok, in the Thai Far South.
Government Spokesman Lieutenant General Sansern Kaewkamnerd announced the government's stance on March 5, aimed to boost local people's quality of life and the local economy of each southernmost province by more than 2 billion baht in 2017, which should also be beneficial to its surrounding areas.
Under the project, the government said, the government plans to speedily build at least two new community-based power plants in Betong District of Yala Province to become a modeled township on sustainable self-reliance of local people in terms of energy security through producing own electricity from biomass, diesel or hydro power, along with developing local tourist attractions linked with wellknown local dishes to draw more international tourists of about 1.2 million, anticipated to earn the locality up to about 2.5 billion baht, and constructing a new airport set to be opened by 2019.
The spokesman told journalists that a dual farming plan will also be promoted and supported in Nong Jik District of adjacent Pattani Province, in which local farmers
will be encouraged to grow two types of economic crops or to raise two types of livestocks simultaneously, namely rice and oil palm, to upgrade themselves to become
"smart farmers" running modern small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the local farm sector where processed farm products are produced, turning the locality to be a modeled township on the modern and mixed agro-industry.
Besides, a modeled border trade locality will be developed in Su-ngai Golok District of Narathiwat Province, where an electronic immigration and customs systems have already been launched, along with a plan to establish a duty free-zone to stimulate local trading to reach an official target of about 4.5 billion baht.
"Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-ocha considers the three boder localities in the violence-plagued Thai Deep South having high potential in terms of their strong economic fundamentals and sound resources and should, thus, be developed to their maximum levels amid their diverse cultures but assimilable co-existence", noted the spokesman.
