Authority sees no shortage of water in Thailand's upcoming dry season
BANGKOK, December 7 (TNA) - The Royal Irrigation Department, under the Thai Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, reports that water levels at main dams remain high and it is, thus, foreseen to have no problem of any water shortage in the country during the upcoming dry season.
Royal Irrigation Department Director-General Thongplew Kongjun released the updated report on December 6, acknowledging that the total amount of water at all large and medium-sized dams and reservoirs in Thailand now stands at almost 60,000 million cubic meters, or about 79 per cent of their combined capacity.
Thongplew told journalists that nearly 36,000 million cubic meters of water, out of the total amount of almost 60,000 million cubic meters, are usable, or about 69 per cent of the total usable amount of water in the country, with the combined amount of usable water at the four main Bhumibol, Sirikit, Khwae Noi Bamrungdan and Pasak Jolasid Dams in the Chao Phraya River alone standing at over 12,100 million cubic meters.
According to the senior Thai official, water levels at all large dams and reservoirs nationwide are normal and sufficient for the consumption and maintenance of the country's ecological system.
The senior Thai official stated that there are two large dams where water levels now stand less than 30 per cent of their each capacity, warning, however, that all sectors nationwide cooperate to use the water productively and help save water in order to reduce the risk of any water shortage in the country in the coming months.
