Baku hosts opening of 23rd Annual Congress of World Association for Medical Law

Baku, July 11, AZERTAC An official opening ceremony of the Annual Congress of World Association for Medical Law (WAML) has been held in Baku. Baku Congress is the 50th Golden Anniversary Meeting of the World Association for Medical Law. The purpose of the WAML is to encourage the study and discussion of health law, legal medicine and ethics, for the benefit of society and the advancement of human rights. The aim of the WAML is to promote the study of the consequences in jurisprudence, legislation and ethics of developments in medicine, health care and related sciences. The major theme of the Congress is Medical Law and Bioethics Education and Multiculturalism. Adressing the opening ceremony, one of the founders of WAML and its current President, Professor Thomas Noguchi stressed the importance of the congress. He thanked President Ilham Aliyev and the organizers for the excellent organization of the event. Professor Noguchi provided an insight into the history of the establishment of the organization. First Vice President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, UNESCO and ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador, President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation Mehriban Aliyeva was awarded WAML 50th Golden Anniversary prize and Honorary Diploma for her special contributions to the development of medical law, bioethics and multiculturalism. The award and honorary diploma were handed to Minister of Health Ogtay Shiraliyev to be presented to First Vice-President Mehriban Aliyeva. In his remarks, Minister of Health Ogtay Shiraliyev highlighted Azerbaijan's model of multiculturalism whch is being taught in 15 countries around the world. The World Association for Medical Law was established and the first Congress was held in Ghent, Belgium in 1967. Since its creation, the WAML has held 19 World Congresses, and used its International Journal Medicine and Law for the publication of more than 2000 articles of authors from more than 100 countries. The Association engages in educational activities and aims to promote discussion and deliberation among academic and non academic channels, through its bi-monthly Members Newsletter, its regular Radio Program and more.
