Commuter Train Passenger Numbers Rise To 10,000 Per Day

Yogyakarta, Aug 23 (ANTARA) - The number of commuter train passengers in Yogyakarta has shot up to 10,000 per day during the Lebaran holiday season. "Unlike in ordinary days, the number of commuter train passengers during the holiday season here has increased sharply," said Eko Budiyanto, the spokesman for state railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), here on Wednesday. "There are 6,000 commuter train passengers during regular days, but the numbers reached 8,000 to 10,000 per day during the holiday season this year," he added. According to Eko, the three commuter trains of Yogyakarta are Prambanan Express (which serves the Kutoarjo-Yogyakarta-Solo route), Railbus (Sukoharjo-Yogyakarta route), and Madiun Jaya (Madiun-Yogyakarta and Solo-Yogyakarta routes). "The number of returning holiday travellers at Yogyakarta train station is likely to peak on Saturday and Sunday, with passenger numbers predicted to exceed 10,000, he stated. "However, PT KAI has six extra trains, including the Bengawan and Progo economic trains, ready to transport around 2,500 passengers per trip to Jakarta and Surabaya," Eko pointed out. According to PT KAI data, a total of 3,492 passengers departed from Tugu and Lempuyangan train stations in Yogyakarta on Tuesday. And during the period starting a week before Lebaran until two days after the festivity, a total of 69,301 passengers were transported.
