Experts:Phuket won't sink
BANGKOK, April 28 (TNA) - Experts have affirmed that Thailand's southern Andaman resort Phuket province will not sink as a result of tremors.
The experts from Thailand’s Mineral Resources Department made the assurance on Friday, after they had thoroughly examined Phuket's cumulative aftershocks, following a 4.3-magnitude earthquake on the renowned Thai resort island on April 16.
According to the experts, 90 per cent of Phuket is supported by very strong granite which was founded hundred-million-years ago and the Thai resort island is also located on a wide surface of the earth.
Meanwhile, Thailand's National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission (NBTC) has offered 1 Po No Phuket’s Radio Station as a focal channel to broadcast important information and to provide immediate and timely advices to local people in case of any emergency.
An NBTC member, Thawatchai Jittrapanun, said that he has made the offer to Phuket Governor Tree Akharadecha, noting that the move is in response to two major earthquakes shaking near Indonesia’s Sumatra Island on April 11, leading to a series of minor tremors on Phuket a week thereafter.
Thawatchai maintained he expects the 1 Po No Phuket’s Radio Station, broadcast through FM 89.0 megahertz and FM 98.0 megahertz, to be a prototype of civil radio services on the southern Thai coastal region.
According to the NBTC member, Phuket's disaster management database is also being developed and the April 16 earthquake and its dozens of aftershocks have prompted local authorities concerned to be always on alert for any possible natural disaster in the future. (TNA)
