Indonesia, China Increase Trade Relation In Wild Flora And Fauna
Jakarta, Sept 3 (Antara) - Indonesia and China have agreed to increase cooperation in the trade of wild flora and fauna.
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed here on Wednesday by the countries` authorities managing the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES).
Indonesia was represented by the director general of Forest Protection and Nature Conservation of the Ministry of Forestry, Sonny Partono, as the authorities managing CITES in Indonesia, while China by Meng Xialing, as the authorities responsible for CITES in China. The Chinese delegation was led by deputy minister of forestry Liu Dongsheng.
Sonny on the occasion noted that with the agreement Indonesia could carry out trade of wild fauna and flora directly with China without involving a third country.
"So far, the trade had been carried out through Singapore, Hong Kong, or Thailand, leading to much of the benefits being enjoyed by the third countries," he explained.
He said trade of wild fauna and flora from Indonesia reached Rp1 trillion, 30 percent of which went to China.
Sonny stated that the signing of the MoU will also enable the two countries to exchange information and communication on trade of wild fauna and flora, as well as their conservation, and strengthen law enforcement against illegal trade activities.
"In the development of cooperation programs and activities, Indonesia and China will prioritize trade of wild fauna and flora and their products in the framework of CITES," he said.
So far, only species of wild flora and fauna that are not protected and included in the Appendix II of CITES have been sold to China, he added.
