Pakistan Sends Emergency Supplies To Iran Quake Victims

Tehran, Aug 16, IRNA -- Pakistan said on Wednesday it sent first batch of emergency supplies to the quake-stricken people in northwest Iran. According to a statement by Pakistani Embassy in Tehran, two Pakistani C-130 aircraft carrying consignments of blankets, tents and other emergency items needed for people affected by disaster arrived in Tabriz airport on August 14. Pakistan had also dispatched humanitarian aid to Iran in 2003 when a strong quake hit the city of Bam, Kerman province. A couple of strong quakes measuring 6.4 and 6.3 on the Richter scale struck East Azarbaijan province on Saturday at 15:53 local time (1123 GMT), killing 300 and injuring 2,000 people. The tremors destroyed villages around the towns of Ahar, Varzaqan, and Herees near the provincial capital of Tabriz. Iran sits on several fault lines and is frequently hit by earthquakes./end
