Thai NBTC seeks public opinions on more regulations

BANGKOK, November 30 (TNA) - Thailand's Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) is organising a two-day television-radio consumers protection expo in Bangkok, aimed to seek public participation in its plan on adding more rules and regulations in the national broadcasting and telecommunication master plan. NBTC Chair Colonel Natee Sukulrat told journalists Friday that his agency will gather public opinions and ideas raised at the television-radio consumers protection expo to be used for working out the additional rules and regulations to keep pace with global changing media operations and to further develop the country's broadcasting and telecommunications businesses. According to the NBTC chair, representatives of consumer networks have, so far, proposed strict enforcements of rules and regulations on programmes which are considered irresponsible for the society and on appropriate airing schedules of different types of programmes, especially those for youths. Besides, the representatives of consumer networks have also suggested that NBTC strictly supervise business operators not to air exaggerated or untruthful advertisements of their goods and services which could cause public damage in terms of losses of assets, safety and health. The NBTC said consumers have also urged that NBTC set up centres throughout the country to receive their complaints and tip-offs. The television-radio consumers protection expo will be held at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre from December 1-2, during which there will be tripartite discussions between representatives of local business operators, consumer networks and NBTC.
