Thailand supports Community of Democracies

MONGOLIA, April 29 (TNA) - Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra says Thailand supports the Community of Democracies, as it has played vital roles to sustain democracy. Yingluck expressed the Thai stance while attending the inauguration of the 7th Ministerial Conference of the Community of Democracies in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia's capital, on Monday morning. In her speech, Yingluck said although democracy has brought about development and hopes for a long time, it has, parallely, faced challenges, as there are a number of people in the world who have still rejected democracy and they appear to be ready to use other means to win power. Yingluck also mentioned Thailand's 1997 Constitution, the coup d’etat in 2006, which had toppled the government of her elder brother, Thaksin Shinawatra, and political demonstrations in Thailand in 2010, expressing her hope to see national reconciliation and democratic development in her home country through the joint support of the government, the opposition and people for effective and constructive law enforcement and peaceful solution. The Thai premier called for boycotts against non-democratic movements and promised her government's support for the Community of Democracies and its governing council. The Thai prime minister acknowledged that the Community of Democracies can play important roles in maintaining and developing democracy worldwide, praising the President of Mongolia for initiating the Asian Partnership for Democracy, in which Thailand also supports.
