Turkish FM says his country is ready to join Arab League sanctions on Syria

RABAT (A.A) - Turkey's foreign minister has said Ankara was ready to impose sanctions on Syria after necessary consultations with the Arab League which had recently suspended Damascus from its meetings and impose sanctions against the Syrian regime over its failure to end crackdown on pro-democracy protesters. "In line with consultations here we are determined to impose the most effective sanctions that would do no harm to the Syrian people," Ahmet Davutoglu told a joint press conference Tuesday with his Moroccan counterpart in Rabat where he was scheduled to participate in a foreign ministers' meeting of the Turkish-Arab Cooperation Forum.   Turkey has already begun intercepting weapons bound for its southern neighbor passing through Turkish waters or airspace.  Families of Turkish diplomats and non-essential diplomatic personnel in Syria were evacuated on Sunday following attacks on Turkish Embassy in Damascus, Consulate General in Aleppo and honorary consulate in Latakia. "If a country cannot protect embassies of other countries, let their flags set ablaze, then that country has some serious malfunctioning in its state powers," Davutoglu told the press conference, adding that Turkey expected a formal apology from the Syrian government for the attacks.
