UK defies US request to call IRGC terrorist group

London, April 10, IRNA - The UK refused on Wednesday to follow the US path to designate the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps as a Foreign Terrorist Organization. 'The decision to proscribe the group is a matter for the US,' a UK Foreign Office spokesman, who requested anonymity, told IRNA on Wednesday. On Monday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told reporters the US will continue to sanction and pressure Iran to 'behave like a normal nation' and urged America's allies to take similar action. The European Union has also tried to distance itself from the US actions. “This union doesn’t comment on the US actions,” an anonymous EU spokesman told IRNA on Wednesday. The Iranian forces in coordination with governments in Iraq and Syria have played a military advisory role in fighting the terrorist group in both countries. Iraq officially announced the defeat of Daesh in 2017, while Syria has managed to retake most of the fallen areas from the terrorists. Referring to the eight-year war with former Iraqi regime, the speaker described IRGC as the main pillar of resistance during the years. The latest anti-Iran move of Trump received fierce reactions from Iranian officials. The country's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif in a letter to President Hassan Rouhani called for a retaliatory move by labeling the United States Central Command (CENTCOM) as a terrorist organization and the US government as a terrorist sponsor. Zarif also called the move as 'another misguided election-eve gift to Netanyahu”.
