Brahimi Highlights Iranˈs Key Role In Settling Syrian Conflict

Berlin, Feb 3 -- UN special envoy on Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi stressed Iranˈs crucial role as part of international efforts to resolve the Syrian conflict. Speaking at the Munich Security Conference Friday night, Brahimi termed Iran an ˈimportantˈ country in the region, saying he was due to meet with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi on the sidelines of the security meeting to discuss the Syrian crisis. Brahimi pointed out that he had repeatedly conferred with Iranˈs leadership on the Syrian situation, saying Tehran had also outlined a six-point plan on settling the conflict. He reiterated support for the creation of a regional contact group on Syria in which Iran would be included. Brahimi made clear it would be very difficult to the settle the Syrian conflict without the help of the regional countries./end
