German MPs Stress Iran Key To Resolving Syrian Conflict

Berlin, Sept 7, IRNA -- Two German lawmakers of the opposition Social Democratic Party (SPD) and the co-governing Free Democratic Party (FDP) highlighted the urgent need to include Iran in a any peaceful settlement of the Syrian conflict, here Friday. The head of the SPD parliamentary faction Frank-Walter Steinmeier wrote in a commentary for the online site for the Hamburg-based weekly Der Spiegel that Iran had to be part of a political solution in Syria IRNA reported. Germany's former foreign minister said Iran should be invited to a planned Syrian peace conference -- dubbed Geneva II. Steinmeiers remarks were underscored by his liberal democratic counterpart Bijan Djir-Sarai who reiterated at a press briefing in the German parliament that the Syrian civil war could not be resolved without Iran. The member of the foreign affairs committee made clear Iran could be a very important player at the next Syrian peace conference. Djir-Sarai said a diplomatic and peaceful solution of the Syrian conflict was possible./end
