Tehran reiterates immediate halt to foreign intervention in Syria

TEHRAN,March 4(MNA) – The Iranian ambassador to the United Nations reiterated an immediate halt to foreign intervention in Syria to help the country find a way out of its crisis. An immediate end to foreign intervention and the provision of weapons and financial support for Syrian opposition groups is essential to help Syria find a way out of the current crisis, Ambassador Mohammad Khazaii said during a recent UN General Assembly meeting on Syria on Friday. He also expressed deep regret about certain countries’ policies on Syria which have caused the Arab country to head for internal conflict. It is a cause for regret that since the onset of the crisis in Syria, certain countries have taken ‘provocative’ positions, called for the overthrow of the current political system in Syria, undermined efforts made to find a political solution to the issue, and encouraged dissidents to wage an armed struggle against the government, he said. Developments in Syria indicate that sanctions, pressure, and meddling in Syria’s internal affairs will only deepen the political and social conflict in the country, he stated. In addition, Khazaii said that all countries should help create an appropriate atmosphere so that Kofi Annan, the new UN-Arab League envoy for Syria, could impartially carry out his mission and fulfill his obligations.
