Thai PM:Imposition of ISA is aimed at preventing violence

BANGKOK, November 24 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra reiterated on Saturday morning that her government's enforcement of the Internal Security Act (ISA) in three districts in Bangkok, effective from November 22-30, is aimed at maintaining law and order, as a mass anti-government rally has begun since earlier in the day. Speaking during her weekly TV and radio address, Yingluck said that the imposition of the ISA is to prevent violence and she has ordered National Police Chief Police General Adul Saengsingkaew to ensure that the anti-government protest is held peacefully. Yingluck insisted that the enforcement of the ISA in the capital's three districts, including Dusit, Phra Nakhon and Pomprab Sattrupai , is not meant to affect the normal livelihood of people, calling for cooperation from the public. The prime minister acknowledged that Thailand has now gained confidence from the international community and Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul has been ordered to explain to foreign envoys based in Thailand the necessity of the temporary imposition of the ISA According to the premier, her Puea Thai Party-led coalition government is prepared to be scrutinised by parliamentarians, as well as to face the upcoming no-confidence debate, lodged by the opposition camp led by the Democrat Party, set from November 25-27, and to be even monitored by independent agencies. Meanwhile, thousands of protesters are joining the rally centred at the Royal Plaza, adjacent to the Government House. The mass anti-government protest is organised by retired General Boonlert Kaewprasit, leader of the Pitak Siam group. (TNA)
