Top U.S. soldier says his country stands by Turkey in fight against terror

WASHINGTON (A.A) - November 2, 2011 - Top U.S. military commander has expressed support to Turkey in the country's fight against PKK terrorism.
"Do not worry, the U.S. stands side by side Turkey in its fight against terrorism. We will continue to support Turkey on this issue and work more to help prevent PKK's illegal activities in Europe," Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the 30th Conference of the American-Turkish Council, or the ATC, in Washington.
Dempsey said Turkey was a strong friend and partner for the United States and a leader country which the world increasingly placed its trust on.
"We are proud to say that Turkish people are a friend to us. And I have a strong belief in the saying 'Tell me who your friends are, and I will tell who you are.'"
Dempsey said Turkey had made invaluable security contributions during the Cold War, the Gulf War, in NATO's new missile radar system project as well as in Afghanistan and Iraq.
"Even during those hard times, Turkey's unbelievable rise and development sparkled. And now, the world needs more than ever the model Turkey has set and its responsible leadership," Dempsey said.
