Turkish Cypriot minister says they do not accept Greek Cypriot presidency of EU
UTRECHT (A.A) - January 11, 2012 - The tourism, environment and culture minister of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) said on Wednesday that Turkish Cypriots did not accept the European Union (EU) presidency of the Greek Cypriot administration.
Unal Ustel said Greek Cypriot presidency of the EU would not be ethical, and Turkish Cypriots aimed to solve Cyprus issue till June when the Greek Cypriot administration was supposed to take over the rotating presidency of the union.
"We do not approve and accept Greek Cypriot presidency of the EU," Ustel told reporters at the TRNC stand in Utrecht Tourism Fair in the Netherlands.
TRNC hosted 11,000 Dutch tourists in 2011, and aims to double this figure in 2012.
Ustel said TRNC would continue to protest the rotating presidency of the Greek Cypriot administration.
"If we cannot agree on anything accepted by them (Greek Cypriots) and us, we will make a decision together with the Republic of Turkey and the status of the North Cyprus in the world will become clear," Ustel said.
Ustel said Turkish Cypriots were hopeful about the trilateral summit to take place among TRNC President Dervis Eroglu, Greek Cypriot leader Demetris Christofias and United Nations (UN) Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in New York at the end of January.
"We believe that peace will come out of that summit, and we hope to get an outcome from that summit," Ustel said.
Ustel said Turkey supported TRNC to establish links with international community.
"Our relations and communication with the world continue thanks to the support of Republic of Turkey, and Turkish Prime Minister," Ustel said.
