ANKARA (A.A) - November 1, 2011 - Turkish dailies mostly covered in their Tuesday's edition several issues including developments after the devastating earthquake in eastern province of Van, Cyprus talks and the world's symbolic "seven billionth" babies.
Hurriyet daily wrote that Sakarya Governor Mustafa Buyuk said that what happened in eastern province of Van hit by a devastating quake and statements made by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan that they would destroy all buildings illegally constructed, boosted communal common sense. The daily quoted Buyuk as saying that most of buildings damaged by the Marmara quake in 1999 would be destroyed within next two years.
Sabah newspaper headlined "Mafia PKK" and said that police confiscated 8 tonnes of hashish buried in the ground in Lice town of southeastern province of Diyarbakir, stating that market value of the haul was about 28 million TL. The daily quoted Diyarbakir Governor Mustafa Toprak as saying that it was a great blow to financial sources of terrorist organization PKK.
Milliyet daily said that the UN chose the world's symbolic "seven billionth" babies from every country to mark the the world's population reaching 7 billion people, stating that Turkey also welcomed Yusuf Efe Ozkan, who was born in Ankara, as one of the world's symbolic "seven billionth" babies. Zaman daily said that UN would grant scholarship to these babies.
Vatan said that Turkish Cypriot and Greek Cypriot parties who gathered in New York reached compromise on a plan for the first time, stating that according to the plan, Cyprus would be united in June 2012 and Turkish Cypriots would constitute one fourth of the parliament in Cyprus.
Turkiye daily said that Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan would pay a visit to Germany to attend celebrations to mark the 50th anniversary of Turkish-German labor recruitment, stating that Erdogan would attend ceremonies in Germany and then proceed to France to participate in G-20 Summit.
Turkiye daily also wrote about aid from 80 provinces of Turkey to the eastern province of Van and said that 200 trucks loaded with humanitarian aid arrived in Van every day.
