More police officers to be deployed in Thai deep South
BANGKOK, October 5 (TNA) - The Royal Thai Police Board has resolved to deploy additional 4,000 police officers in the country's violence-plagued far South to help keep order.
Royal Thai Police Spokesman Police Major General Piya Uthayo told reporters that the decision was made at Friday's meeting of the Royal Thai Police Board at Bangkok's Government House, chaired by Prime Minister Yingluck shinawatra and attended for the first time by newly-appointed National Police Chief Police General Adul Saengsingkaew.
Under the policy, the spokesman said, additional 1,700 junior police officers will be recruited, with strict screening to assure their qualifications and performances, and will be trained for four months, before beginning their operations in the Thai deep South by April 2013.
According to the spokesman, the Royal Thai Police Board also approved an Interior Ministry plan to increase its territorial defence volunteers by about 2,500.
Meanwhile, a batch of some 2,025 new police sergeant majors will also be immediately deployed in Thailand's southern border region once they complete an ongoing six-month training course. (TNA)
