Principlists, reformists dominate Tehran City Council

TEHRAN,June 19(MNA) – The results of the Tehran City Council election were officially announced on Tuesday, with 16 principlists, 13 reformists, and two independents wining seats on the council. The fourth city and village council elections were held simultaneously with presidential vote on June 14. A total of 2,786,357 votes were cast in Tehran, 2,242,662 of which were valid. 1,732 candidates had registered for the election in the Tehran, Rey, and Shemiranat constituency. Principlist Mehdi Chamran, the current chairman of the Tehran City Council, received 556,614 votes and came in first in the election. His nearest rivals were Alireza Dabir, a champion freestyle wrestler, and pro-reform former culture and Islamic guidance minister Ahmad Masjed Jame’i, whose shares of the vote were 400,677 and 281,548 respectively. Hossein Rezazadeh, Habib Kashani, Hadi Saei, Morteza Talaei, Parviz Sorouri, Reza Taqipour, Elaheh Rastgou, Abbas Sheibani, Esmaeil Dousti, Ahmad Donyamali, Mohammad Salari, Mohammad Mehdi Tondgouyan, Fatemeh Daneshvar, Ahmad Hakimipour, Mohammad Haqqani, Mojtaba Shakeri, Abdolhossein Mokhtabad, Rahmatollah Hafezi, Abolfazl Qena’ati, Eqbal Shakeri, Mehdi Hojjat, Gholamreza Ansari, Masoumeh Abad, Abdolmoqim Nasehi, Mohsen Sorkhou, Abbas Jadidi, Mohsen Pirhadi, and Mohammad Mehdi Moftteh were also elected to the council.
