SPEAKER SENDS LETTER TO IPU SECRETARY-GENERAL

Ulaanbaatar /MONTSAME/ The Speaker of the State Great Khural Z.Enkhbold sent a letter to Mr Anders B. Johnsson, the Secretary-General of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) on December 5.
The Speaker writes Mongolia is happy that the UN Disarmament Commission (UNODA) and the World Future Council (WFC) selected Mongolia's policy on disarmament as one of the world’s greatest policies this October 23.
In order to back the common purpose of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, Mongolia announced itself as a nuclear weapon-free zone in 1992, and has been working intensively to ensure it with international law, the Speaker writes.
He notes that the Mongolian parliament adopted a law on nuclear weapon-free status in 2000, thus banning any actions or activities in nuclear weapons armament within the country. Mongolia has been cooperating with many, including the Nuclear Weapon States (NWS), in strengthening this status, and it was approved by the NWS in 2012, he adds.
Emphasizing that the IPU has been playing an important role in propagandizing the disarmament of nuclear weapons throughout the world, the Speaker writes the Mongolian parliament will actively collaborate with the IPU and its members in making the IPU Assembly meetings more successful and fruitful.
