Indonesia strongly condemns Israel's move to restrict UNRWA operations

Jakarta, July 24 (ANTARA) - Indonesia has strongly condemned Israel's legislative efforts to restrict the functions of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) by labeling it a "terrorist organization."

On Monday, July 22, the Knesset passed three bills in their first reading, which, if enacted, would effectively ban UNRWA activities within Israeli territory.

"Israel's systematic efforts to dismantle UNRWA are unacceptable and, subsequently, negate the rights of Palestinian refugees to return and to be repatriated to their homes," said Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its statement on social media on Wednesday.

The ministry reiterated Indonesia's unwavering support for UNRWA and urged the international community to defend the agency's humanitarian mission, which is vital for millions of Palestinians.

"UNRWA must continue to implement its mandate in accordance with international law and relevant UN resolutions," the ministry stated.

The three proposed bills aim to prohibit UNRWA operations in Israel, revoke the immunity and special rights of UNRWA personnel, and classify UNRWA as a "terrorist organization," thereby mandating Israel to terminate its cooperation with the agency.

Following their initial approval, these bills will move to the Knesset's Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee for further consideration.

Other countries, including Palestine, Turkey, and Jordan, have also condemned Israel's actions against UNRWA.

Indonesia, a staunch supporter of Palestinian rights, reaffirmed its commitment to UNRWA during a recent pledging conference at the UN Headquarters.

Indonesia pledged to increase its regular contribution by US$1.2 million and provide an additional $2 million grant for the UNRWA Flash Appeal from April to December.
