Priority given to building railways connecting Tan Son Nhat, Long Thanh airports

HCM City, October 23 (VNA) - In a report submitted to the Prime Minister regarding the railway connection between Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh airports, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee recommended implementation of Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh–Tham Luong, Ben Thanh–Thu Thiem) and the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh railway.
The move is essential to meet passenger transport needs from downtown Ho Chi Minh City to Long Thanh International Airport in neighbouring Dong Nai Province.
Currently, the two localities are coordinating to review, update, and adjust master plans, integrating the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh railway into the urban railway network to ensure consistency and alignment with the overall railway planning.
The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee stated that it will focus on accelerating the connection via Metro Line 2 and the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh railway. Synchronous investment will be made in terms of progress, infrastructure and related technical factors, with modern, upgradable, and fully integrated technical specifications to ensure uniformity along the entire route.
The Ben Thanh–Tham Luong section of Metro Line 2 is being implemented as a public investment project and is expected to commence construction in 2025. The Ben Thanh–Thu Thiem and Tham Luong–Cu Chi sections are under preparation, with investment planned for 2026–2030 and 2031–2035, and completion targeted for 2035.
Meanwhile, the Thu Thiem–Long Thanh railway project has undergone a pre-feasibility study organised by the Ministry of Construction. This urban railway will be approximately 42 km long, with 11.8 km through Ho Chi Minh City and 30.2 km through Dong Nai. The line is designed as a double-track, 1,435 mm gauge, with a designed speed of 120 km/h, and will include 20 stations (16 elevated and 4 underground)./.
