Feats of Heroes of Republic Shinning in History of Great War Victory

Pyongyang, June 30 (KCNA) -- During the Fatherland Liberation War, the brave soldiers of the People's Army displayed matchless bravery and mass heroism from the first day of the war.
A decree of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly of the DPRK on enacting the title of Hero of the Republic was issued on June 30, 1950, under the great benevolence of President Kim Il Sung to add eternal shine to the feats of the soldiers of the People's Army.
After the lapse of a half month the title was awarded to more than 10 persons including officers of the Second Torpedo Boat Squadron who sank the U.S. imperialists' heavy cruiser Baltimore and destroyed a light cruiser with four torpedo boats, pilots who shot down the U.S. imperialists' bombers B-29 described as a "flying fortress" and tankmen who performed distinguished military feats in the battle for liberating Seoul.
Among the heroes are an 18-year-old soldier who dedicated his youth and life to the motherland without hesitation, a nurse who destroyed the enemy tank with a bunch of grenades and a driver who reliably transported munitions to the front.
The feats of many heroes including the coast artillerymen who defeated the enemy's huge forces for three days with only four artillery pieces in the battle for defending the Wolmi Islet are shining in the history of the great war victory.
The title of Twice Hero of the Republic was awarded to teen-aged aircraft-hunter team member who shot down more than 10 enemy fighters with heavy machine gun, an assault team member who destroyed three enemy tanks and opened up a road of advance by blocking an enemy's gun muzzle with his breast and scouts who contributed to the unit's victory in a battle through bold and skilful reconnaissance activities.
More than 600 heroes were produced in the three years of the war and five of them were twice heroes of the Republic. -0-
