Najran University Secures US Patent for High-Sensitivity Imidacloprid Detection Sensor

Najran, June 30, 2026, SPA -- Najran University has been granted a new patent by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for the development of a high-sensitivity electrochemical sensor to detect the insecticide imidacloprid. The research achievement reflects the use of nanotechnology and advanced materials to create scientific solutions that help protect the environment and improve quality of life, with support from the Ministry of Education through the Institutional Funding Program.
The innovation is based on the development of a hybrid nanocomposite consisting of silver nanoparticles deposited on mesoporous carbon supported by local hematite ore. The nanocomposite was prepared through a simple, low-cost wet chemical method, providing a sensor with high sensitivity, precise selectivity, operational stability, a response time of less than 10 seconds, and the ability to be reused without affecting its analytical efficiency.
The innovation aims to develop an advanced analytical method for the rapid and accurate detection of imidacloprid, an insecticide widely used in crop protection.
