China pledges neutrality on Cambodia weapons amid talks with Thailand

BANGKOK, July 24 (TNA) - China’s defense minister has assured Thailand of Beijing's neutral stance regarding arms supplies to Cambodia, emphasizing that China values both nations as close regional partners, the Thai defense minister said on Friday.

Speaking after an official meeting with Chinese Defense Minister Admiral Dong Jun, Thai Defense Minister Lt. Gen. Adul Boonthamcharoen said the two sides held open talks concerning regional security and military cooperation.

According to Adul, the Chinese defense minister stated that while China possesses advanced military hardware and provides equipment to Cambodia under existing long-term treaties, Beijing is managing the timing of these deliveries and refraining from actions during periods of border friction to maintain neutrality. He added that Beijing remains committed to its comprehensive strategic partnership with Thailand.

During the talks, China proposed elevating military cooperation with Thailand, covering joint training, education, technology, and artificial intelligence, Adul said, noting that specific details remained confidential due to security reasons.

The Chinese delegation is scheduled to meet Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul later on Friday, followed by an official dinner. Adul has also accepted an invitation to pay an official visit to China to further bilateral military ties.-819 (TNA)
