Indonesia's 100 GW solar power project attracts US$62 billion

Gilimanuk, Bali (ANTARA) - Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Bahlil Lahadalia said the investment potential of the 100-gigawatt-peak (GWp) solar power plant project is estimated at approximately Rp1,140 trillion (US$62 billion).

"The total investment for 100 GW is Rp1,140 trillion," he said at the launch and groundbreaking event for the solar power plant in Gilimanuk, Bali, on Tuesday.

He added that the power plant project could also save Rp73.9 trillion (US$4 billion) in subsidies.

These subsidy savings can be realized by reducing the need for diesel fuel, as the solar plant projects are targeted to replace diesel-powered power plants that use diesel fuel, he explained.

"From this total project, we can achieve annual subsidy savings of Rp73.9 trillion," the minister noted.

Lahadalia said the development of 100 GWp is expected to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 140.16 million tons of CO2.

On Tuesday, President Prabowo Subianto launched the strategic 100 GWp solar power plant program at the Gilimanuk Operations Monument in Jembrana, Bali.

The inauguration ceremony in Gilimanuk, Bali, was held simultaneously online with events at three other locations: the Gajah Mungkur Floating Solar Power Plant in Wonogiri, Central Java; the Sembur Village Solar Power Plant in Batam, Riau Islands; and the Rengit Island Solar Power Plant in Bangka Belitung.

The solar power plant in Bali has a capacity of 198 MWp, while the BESS has a capacity of 666 MWh, covering an area of approximately 211 hectares.

Lahadalia said the project is targeted to begin operations in 2028.

Data from PLN President Director Darmawan Prasodjo showed that the PLTS is specifically designed to initiate the complete elimination of fuel oil use in Bali's electricity system through an integration scheme combining PLTS and a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS).
