Indonesia, UN chief push Palestine peace, stronger multilateralism

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia’s foreign affairs minister met UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres in New York to press for Palestinian peace and stronger multilateral cooperation, reaffirming Jakarta’s commitment to a two-state solution and international law.

Foreign Affairs Minister Sugiono and Guterres discussed the worsening situation in Palestine and efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace during talks at UN headquarters on Monday, Indonesia’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a statement released in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Sugiono praised Guterres’ leadership amid mounting global challenges and reiterated Indonesia’s firm support for the United Nations and multilateralism as the core framework for conflict resolution and global stability.

He confirmed he would attend a UN Security Council meeting on Feb. 18, 2026, which will focus on Middle East peace efforts and growing challenges in Palestine.

Sugiono also said President Prabowo Subianto would join the Board of Peace meeting in Washington on Feb. 19 alongside several world leaders to strengthen diplomatic efforts toward conflict resolution.

"Our position is clear: Indonesia’s engagement in the Board of Peace is fully guided by the UN Charter, the two-state solution vision, and UN Security Council Resolution 2803 (2025),” Sugiono said.

He stressed Indonesia’s participation reflects its commitment to promoting a just and lasting peace while ensuring the Board of Peace mechanism complements and reinforces ongoing UN efforts.

Guterres welcomed Sugiono’s visit and praised Indonesia’s consistent support for a peaceful resolution of the Palestinian issue.

He voiced deep concern over the situation in the West Bank, which he said clearly violates international law and relevant UN resolutions.

Guterres emphasized the importance of Muslim-majority countries, including Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim-majority country, playing a constructive role in the Board of Peace.

Both sides also exchanged views on broader global security and development challenges, with Guterres describing Indonesia as a key partner in strengthening the multilateral system.
