Malaysia Is Only Southeast ASEAN Country To Qualify For Tier B Of FIFA U-15 World Cup And Festival

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 27 (Bernama) -- Malaysia emerged as the only team from Southeast Asia to advance to Tier B at the 2026 FIFA Under-15 (U-15) World Cup and Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan.

The national youth squad, coached by P. Maniam, achieved this proud feat after finishing Group H as runners-up with three wins, one draw, and one defeat, thereby qualifying for the Round of 32 of Tier B.

Tier B is the second-highest tier of the tournament, bringing together teams ranked from 33rd to 64th best.

Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) President Ab Ghani Hassan described the achievement as proof of the national youth players' ability to compete on the international stage, while also reflecting the positive development of the country's grassroots football.

"I am happy and satisfied with the performance shown by the national U-15 football squad coached by P. Maniam at the 2026 FIFA U-15 World Cup and Festival in Baku, Azerbaijan.

"What we are even more proud is that Malaysia emerged as the only team from Southeast Asia to succeed in advancing to the Tier B stage, thereby proving the capability of the national youth lineup to compete on the international stage," he said in an FAM statement Tuesday.

Ab Ghani said this achievement deserves recognition as it reflects the effort, commitment, discipline, and high fighting spirit shown by the players throughout facing challenges against teams from various countries.

He also expressed appreciation to the entire coaching staff and players for their hard work and dedication in preparing the team until they successfully carved out this proud result.

The Harimau Malaya U-15 squad is scheduled to face South Africa in the Tier B Round of 32 tomorrow (Wednesday).

The inaugural tournament saw the participation of 191 countries previously divided into 24 groups, and the final group standings will determine the placement for the Tier A to F competitions scheduled to take place from October 28 to 30.
