STATE'S NEW LOOK RIVER TAXI TO BE UNVEILED IN JULY
KUCHING (Malaysia), Jan 14 (Bernama) -- East Malaysia state of Sarawak's
river taxis, an integral travel mode in the state, will spot a new look and
start operating by July, plying the main routes from Kuching Borneo Convention
Centre to the new Satok Market here.
Sarawak Housing and Urban Development Minister Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg
said for a start, three river taxis, equipped with latest safety features, would
start operations with each boat capable of accommodating five, 10 and 15
passengers.
"We are planning to build eight new jetties along the routes with one
expected to be built soon and the rest to be constructed under the 10th Malaysia
Plan (RMK-10)," he told reporters after a briefing by the Sarawak River Board
(SRB) here Thursday.
Abang Johari said the idea behind the introduction of new look river taxis
was to ease traffic congestion in Satok, a well known commercial and banking
centre, as well as to provide an alternative mode of public transportation and
add a new tourism product.
"The traditional river taxis or locally known "perahu tambang" is still
retained and operating in the existing routes," he said.
The traditional river taxis that have been in service since the colonial
era, normally made of wood and which accommodate about six to eight passengers,
is still operating in the heart of Kuching City, connecting the Malay village
across the river to nearby five star hotels or shopping complexes, he said.
He assured that once operational, the new look river taxis would offer
efficient and fast service at affordable fares.
"The fares have yet to be decided but a special committee has been formed
in line with the preparation to launch the new look of river taxis," he said.
He said the special committee comprised officials from SRB, Marine
Department, Satok Tourism Committee, related government departments and
agencies.
