BALI ARTS FESTIVAL SHOULD BE HELD ANNUALLY: PRESIDENT

Denpasar, Bali, June 15 (ANTARA) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said the Bali Arts Festival (PKB) should be held annually as a manifestation of love and pride of national culture.

"We should organize PKB every year as a manifestation of our love and pride of national arts," he said when opening the 30th PKB at the People's Struggle Monument here on Saturday.

By holding the event annually, the international community would be more familiar with Bali known as the world's most beautiful island, he said.

The head of state said Bali had made progress all the time since
the deadly bombing attack on October 12, 2002 when 202 people, mostly foreigners, were killed.

"PKB also has become increasingly larger and livelier since then," said the president who was dressed in Balinese attire.

On the occasion, the president also expressed gratitude to all sides, particularly the Balinese people who had organized the event routinely.

Meanwhile, Bali Governor Dewa Beratha said arts and culture had actually crystalized into the Balinese people's life.

"The 2008 PKB is of special significance because it coincides with the 30th anniversary of PKB, the 50th anniversary of the Bali regional administration, the 100th anniversary of national awakening and the Visit Indonesia Year 2008," he said.

Art teams from eight districts and one municipality in Bali and art teams from a number of provinces in Indonesia as well as 14 foreign art troupes are taking part in the month-long festival to end on July 12.
