TRAINING SCHEME WILL MEET NEW REQUIREMENTS IN NEW ECONOMIC MODEL
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 16 (Bernama) -- The Human Resources Ministry will ensure
that its training scheme will be able to meet the new requirements based on the
country's New Economic Model (NEM).
Minister Dr S.Subramaniam said today it was important for the ministry to
supply higher-skilled labour as well to ensure that people could work and
participate in the NEM, which is expected to change the country's current
labour-based manufacturing sector towards one using high technology.
"The new model will be based on high wage, high skill and high production.
We've already started the move to see our level of skill training if they are
able to meet the new requirements.
"Some new technologies are coming, for example, nano technology which
requires different skills from whatever skills we had before," he told reporters
after opening the 58th Malaysian Association of Indian Chambers of Commerce and
Industry (MAICCI) annual delegates conference here.
Subramaniam said some areas like the electronic and electrical industries
would probably move up from lower-end work to a higher-end work, which needed
higher skills and experienced workers.
"We will gradually shift (from lower end work to high end work), we cannot
overnight tell them (the small industry) to close and everybody will lose their
jobs. It should be a gradual shift," he said.
The NEM which is set to become a platform to restore and drive the national
economy in the future, is expected to be tabled at a Cabinet meeting next month
for approval and will be the government's base in forming the 10th Malaysia Plan
(10MP).
