Sheikha Lubna receives Honorary Doctorate of Laws from UK's Exeter University
London - Jan 25, 2010 (WAM)- UAE Minister of Foreign Trade H.E. Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi, was bestowed an Honorary Doctorate of Laws (LLD) during the postgraduate graduation ceremony held yesterday at the University of Exeter campus in Exeter, Devon, UK.
In her acceptance speech, the Minister pointed out that law and formal sets of rules are essential to efficient international trade, especially in light of the protracted downturn. She also lauded Exeter's key role in promoting a better global understanding of the Middle East, particularly through the University's Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies (IAIS).
Lubna thanked the UAE's visionary leadership, starting from its former president, the late H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, for inspiring the nation's women to take on more productive roles in national development while valuing their heritage.
"As the UAE's Minister of Foreign Trade, I help make sure that our commercial laws align with the needs and conditions of the global markets. At the same time it is especially important for so-called ‘emerging economies' such as ourselves, both to understand and to help shape these ‘rules of the game', to ensure the agreements that result from our negotiations with regional and international trade partners serve the interests of all," said H.E. Sheikha Lubna.
"My ministerial work has indeed been about Law in its broadest sense - as well as politics and economics: the three subjects are, in fact, increasingly difficult to disentangle. In that sense, it is a real honour to be recognised for my contribution to Law by such a distinguished body as Exeter, and for this I am truly grateful," she added.
The UAE minister underlined the significance of contribution of emerging economies, including that of UAE, to contribute effectively in setting the rules of the world trade, a move that would boost agreements with the regional and trade partners.
Many distinguished UAE personalities such as H.H. Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al-Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and Dr Sulaiman Al-Jassim, Vice-President of Zayed University, have studied under Exeter's programmes. The University's IAIS hosts more than 30 Arab students, 6 of whom are from the UAE and two of whom are UAE Nationals. These students are involved in fields ranging from history, politics, and economics, to gender studies, literature, and specialised Gulf studies.
H.E. Sheikha Lubna attended the UK University's Gulf alumni dinner in Sharjah last April 2009 in a strong show of support for Exeter's pursuit of stronger friendship and collaborative scholarship with the region and the broader Middle East.
