ASEAN TOURISM MINISTERS SAY `AYE` TO PROMOTIONAL CHAPTER IN MUMBAI

From Kristy Inus

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN, Jan 25 (Bernama) -- The second meeting of Asean and
India Tourism Ministers at the Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) 2010 here Monday, saw
the Asean ministers giving the thumbs up to the establishment of the Asean
Tourism Promotional Chapter (ATPC) in Mumbai.

The ATPC would be an important collaborative platform for Asean national
tourism organisations (NTOs) to market Southeast Asia to the Indian consumers,
they said in a joint press statement.

"Asean tourism ministers expressed their appreciation to Indian Tourism
Minister Sultan Ahmed for the endorsement of the establishment of ATPC in
Mumbai and the facilitation to be extended for its activities upon the
application of the Asean secretary-general Dr Surin Pitsuwan," they said in the
statement read out by Brunei's Industry and Primary Resources Minister Awang
Yahya Begawan, who is the host of the ATF 2010.

On another note, the ministers also welcomed the adoption of the Asean-India
Aviation Cooperation Framework by transport officials as the foundation for
closer aviation cooperation between Asean and India.

"The ministers are confident that its early implementation will result in a
more liberalised environment, which will be beneficial to tourism integration in
Asean and India," they said.

The number of tourist arrivals between Asean and India had shown a steady
growth, with the number of tourist arrivals from India to Asean recorded at
more than 1.9 million last year.

Earlier Monday, the ministers attended the Ninth Meeting of Asean + 3
(China, Japan and Korea), which was also attended by China National Tourism
Administration vice-chairman Zhu Shanzhong, Japan parliamentary secretary for
Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Yuji Fujimoto, and Korea's Culture,
Sports and Tourism vice-minister Jae Min Shin.

In the joint press statement, the Asean tourism ministers said they
welcomed the establishment of the Asean-China Centre that would contribute to
the increase of tourism exchange between Asean and China, and looked forward to
the early establishment of the centre to be located in Beijing.

The Asean bloc has already established the Asean-Japan Centre and the
Asean-Korea Centre.

The ministers also look forward to Japan's support to the proposed Asean
Cruise Infrastructure Development Study, which will provide a baseline study of
the region's available cruise infrastructure.

China, Japan and Korea continue to be the important source market for Asean
member states, contributing to more than 15 million arrivals or 23.3 per cent of
total international tourist arrivals in Asean.
