Cyrus Cylinder to be returned in Iran

Tehran, June 18, IRNA - The Cyrus Cylinder, the first charter of Human Rights and the charter of Cyrus the Great, will be put on display at Iran National Museum (INM).

According to INM Public Relations, the directors of INM Mohammad Reza Mehrandish and Britannia Museum, Robert Neil McGregor have reached an agreement to return the Cyrus Cylinder to Iran after 130 years.

In a bid to introduce Iran's rich culture, McGregor stated that
Britannia Museum is going to make film about the historical works of
Safavid era and holy places.

Cyrus Cylinder, a baked-clay Aryan language (Old Persian) cuneiform
cylinder, was discovered in 1878 during excavation of the site of
Babylonia.

In the cylinder, Cyrus the Great described his human treatment of the
inhabitants of Babylonia after its conquest by the Iranians.

The document has been hailed as the first charter of human rights and
in 1971 the United Nations published its translations in all official
languages of the international organization.

This is a confirmation that the charter of freedom of humankind issued
by Cyrus the Great on his coronation day in Babylon could be
considered superior to the Human Rights Manifesto issued by the French
revolutionaries in their first national assembly.

The Human Rights Manifesto looks very interesting in its kind
regarding the expressions and composition, but the Charter of Freedom
issued twenty three centuries before that by the Iranian monarch
sounds more spiritual.
