FORMER MINISTER TO LEAD TEAM OF SEVEN CLIMBERS TO CONQUER EVEREST
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 26 (Bernama) -- After the success of 11 Malaysians in conquering Mount Everest since 1997, seven more climbers led by former Information Minister Dr Khalid Yunus will attempt to scale the world's highest peak in May next year.
Khalid, 66, who is also the National Adventure Association president, said
the expedition would be participated by a woman climber, Roslizawati Rashidi.
This followed the success of Marina Ahmad who in 2007 became the first
Malaysian woman to conquer Everest, he said.
"The seven climbers, including myself, have been training for two years and
each month, we made it a point to climb a mountain in Malaysia," he told
reporters after the pre-launching of the Misi Perdana de'EVEREST 2011 by the
prime minister's wife Rosmah Mansor.
Khalid, who was in the 2007 expedition in conjunction with the country's
50th independence, said they were now in their final phase of training, focusing
on major mountains abroad to get used to the extreme cold and thin air.
In the 2007 expedition, Khalid said he experienced difficulties during the
climb from Camp 3 to Camp 4 at the height of 7,200 metres and had to descend to
the foot of the mountain.
He said that unlike in the 2007 expedition which started in Nepal, this time
around, they would start from Tibet.
"The level of difficulties is about the same but the climb from Tibet will
first go through a vast empty area," Khalid said, adding that his team had just
returned from the highest peak in South Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro.
In March, the group would climb the Alpine in New Zealand, he said.
He added that the Everest project cost RM2.5 million (US$730,430).
Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak is expected to officially launch
the project in April.
Meanwhile, Roslizawati, 27, said she underwent training like other members
of the team.
"I'm taking part in the expedition because I like this activity and I also
want to test my capabilities," said the dietary expert.
Apart from Roslizawati, other members of team are Dr Khalid, communication
engineer Mohd Illaham Ishak, 36, teacher Shahrul Azuan Shahruddin, 30, soldier
Zainul Fikri Mohd Idrus, 31, UiTM student Mohamad Shaheir Sabaruddin, 27 and
entrepreneur Mohd Dendera Billah Zamzuri, 30.
