M'SIANS LACKS AWARENESS ON IMPORTANCE OF OCEAN'S TREASURES, SAYS DEPUTY MINISTER
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 27 (Bernama)-- Malaysians lack awareness on the importance of the ocean's treasures and this can result in the depletion of natural resources and cause a decline of the country's ecosystem, said Natural Resources and Environment deputy minister Joseph Kurup.
"Many do not realise that our country is rich in marine
biodiversity. For example, corals are a marine ecosystem that have so much
biodiversity which need to be monitored and protected," he said when launching a
book titled 'Marine Parks of Malaysia-Beauty Beyond The Land', here Tuesday.
Kurup said Malaysia was lucky to have 42 islands gazetted as Marine Parks
and that 32 others were in the pipeline to be gazetted.
The 200-page book published by the Marine Parks Department and costing RM170
a copey are available at Marine Parks Department offices nationwide.
