German diplomats involved in Tehran riots: Iran's intelligence official

TEHRAN, Jan. 27 (MNA) -- The Iranian deputy intelligence minister has announced that German diplomats based in Iran had a hand in the Ashura day riots in Tehran.

“One of the networks whose members were arrested during the Ashura day riots is affiliated to Germany’s intelligence service and was led by German diplomats,” the deputy intelligence minister said at a meeting in Tehran on Wednesday.

He went on to say that the members of the network were linked to the German diplomats and attended their parties and exchanged intelligence with them in the run-up to the riots.

Mourning ceremonies were held across Iran on the day of Ashura (December 27) to mark the anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (AS) and his 72 companions.

Protesters took to the streets in central Tehran on that day and chanted slogans against top government officials.

There are photos and film footage of the diplomats and the members of the network at their parties and the German Embassy must be held accountable, the deputy intelligence minister said.

Two of the German diplomats who were arrested during the riots were carrying the same signs and symbols that they had given the members of the network, he added.

He also stated that a number of people who were detained on Ashura day were from other towns because the Mojahedin Khalq Organization terrorist group had called on its members to take part in the riots.

Commenting on the arrest of a close aide of defeated presidential candidate Mir-Hossein Mousavi, the deputy intelligence minister said the aide was linked to the intelligence service of a European country.
