GTP: FUNDAMENTAL CHANGE NECESSARY TO REACH DEVELOPMENTAL GOALS
KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is in danger of becoming stuck as
a middle income nation and fall short of its developmental goals unless it
institutes a fundamental change not just in economic performance but also in the
delivery of public goods.
The Government Transformation Programme Roadmap (GTP), unveiled Thursday by
Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, said it was established by the
government in response to its commitment to make fundamental changes to meet
tough challenges in achieving Malaysia's aspiration of attaining developed
nation status by 2020.
Among the challenges include reducing crime and corruption, poverty
alleviation and enhancing quality of education and infrastructure in rural and
urban areas.
A fundamental change is planned, in accordance with the principles of
1Malaysia, People First, Performance Now, through a partnership between the
rakyat and government which has delivered so much since Independence.
Thus, the GTP focus on actions and outcomes the people can immediately see
and feel in areas identified as National Key Results Areas (NKRAs) and
Ministerial Key Results Areas (MKRAs).
NKRA covers areas identified as most important priorities for the country
such as reduced crime rate, while MKRAs covers areas identified as the key
responsibilities of each ministry like faster delivery.
In parallel, the National Economic Action Council is formulating the New
Economic Model and the Economic Planning Unit is developing the Tenth Malaysia
Plan to implement new economic strategies.
" Both documents will be released this year and the GTP should be read
together with these plans.
" The people's feedback is needed for constant vigilance to monitor
government performance. This programme will not succeed without support and
contribution from the people," it added.
The Performance Management and Delivery Unit (Pemandu) is the unit within
the Prime Minister's Department responsible for overseeing this programme.
