INDIAN NATIONAL SENTENCED TO HANG FOR KETAMINE TRAFFICKING

SHAH ALAM (Malaysia), Jan 29 (Bernama) -- An Indian national was sentenced by
the High Cour here Friday to hang for trafficking in 25kg of ketamine at the KL
International Airport (KLIA) two years ago.

Judicial Commissioner Mohd Yazid Mustafa passed the death sentence on
Athiseshan Singaram, 48, after ruling that the prosecution had proven its case
beyond doubt.

He said the defence was one of mere denial and evidence from the prosecution
witnesses clearly showed that Athiseshan constantly held the bag containing the
drug and knew its contents at all times.

Athiseshan was found guilty of committing the offence at the customs
examination counter of the airport at about 3.30pm on July 26, 2008.

The prosecution, represented by deputy public prosecutor from the customs
department Azamuddin Abd Aziz, called 10 witnesses while the defence,
represented by James George, called one.
