A team to visit Iraq to pursue case of Iranians held in Iraqi jails

TEHRAN, Jan. 31 (MNA) – Hasan Qashqavi, Iran’s deputy foreign minister for consular affaires, announced that Iranian and Iraqi delegations will exchange visits to examine the state of their imprisoned nationals in the other country.

Many Iranians are being held in Iraqi prisons as they had entered Iraq illegally to visit holy sites.

In the fifth Iran-Iraq consular meeting which was held on Thursday and Friday, both sides made an agreement based on which delegations are planned to exchange visits to discuss the issue of imprisoned citizens in each other country, Qashqavi explained.

According to the agreement, the Iraqi party is bound to express its views over the draft of extradition accord promptly, said Qashqavi who is also tasked with expatriates affairs.

The diplomat went on to say that the Iraqi party has pledged to treat Iranian pilgrims respectfully and to facilitate pilgrimage to holy shrines in Iraq and Iran by Iranian and Iraqi citizens.

Pointing to Iraqi officials’ positive stance on the issue, he said, “Two sides should show their determination to implement the provisions of the agreement in order to make great strides in removing the obstacles” facing pilgrims.
